I have read that the Fruit Growing image on the Dollar parcel post stamp is attributed to California and Florida. Is either correct? Thanks, Jeff

The Johl book states "the central picture is a.view of a fruit orchard which by the abundance of the fruit and foliage is reminiscent of the West Coast or Florida". I am not sure that anyone really knows exactly what images might have been used to produce the stamp. The BEP had no real reason to care whether anyone knew or not at the time.

Quotes are from the BEP records.

Quote:
...I transmit herewith a photograph of a fruit orchard...have...prepared and submitted... a model of the one dollar parcel post stamp showing this fruit orchard.
As to the photograph

From a photo submitted by the Agricultural Department

I have not discover any further information regard where the image of the "fruit orchard" was captured.

Designs similar used on postcard that were printed by private companies claim the view is from either Florida or (southern) California depending where the cards were sold. Those even had one or more folks on ladders picking fruit. The stamp's lighten sky (as directed by the Postmaster General) is filled in on the cards with some, the California having what looks to be SoCal areas in the distance.

Edit: To add quote source and more post card details. And to say the final versions of the 50 (dairy) and 75 (agriculture) were also from photos supplied from the Department of Agriculture.

Jeff, you could have just emailed me...

I have been looking at that type of scene on post cards for a long time and own more than a few. It became interesting to see how the same general image was tweaked and changed in different version and by different printers. I think I even found one with the wood slat box(es) showing in the ground.

PS I gave you mml1942 a compliment in one of the three recently back from near dead special handing threads.

Parcelpostguy:

I missed that. You made me go back and look, and "Thank you" for the kind words.
