I obtained a few US Postal Cards and cannot see any watermarks visually. Is it appropriate to use the Ronsonol lighter fluid to determine if and size of the watermark so I can verify UX1 or UX3?

No, do not 'dip' a postal card.

Instead use a strong backlight, like this.

When I need better backlighting to see a watermark on a postal card, I use an inverted Ott light and a piece of cardboard to block the excess light. The Ott light is bright hence the need for the cardboard filter. This technique is especially helpful for sorting UX4/UX5.
