A rare and possibly unique ink-stripping giving a foggy or misty sea effect of Abel Tasman's flagship the Heemskerck is emerging from. The stamp on the left was not affected. The entire right side is badly affected, the 40c value nearly gone.

Given that this is an engraved stamp, my guess is a poorly inked plate. There is no fade until the middle of the "S" in "Australia," which could imply that this was caused by something in-between the plate and the paper. That something would have to have been somewhat absorbent to allow a portion, but not all of the ink to get onto the stamp itself.

Hi shermae

That didn't come to mind, it is quite a feasible theory as to the origin of the unusual ink-stripping.
