I believe this says SPUD CAR, rather than SPUR CAR. It must have been a train car parked at the Terminal RPO, to provide extra space for handling extra mail at a busy time of year. It is believed that Spud was probably part of the Railway Mail Service's lingo, but I don't know quite what it meant or where it originated from.

Anything anyone can tell me would be much appreciated!

It's SPUR CAR. If you enlarge it you can read it.

Definitely SPUR CAR and without enlargement. Only looks like SPUD in a quick glance as the R in SPUR appears to be poorly inked.

I like "SPUD" as there is no indication of ink coming from the loop of the P as compared to the other "R" and the ink blobs on the vertical stroke of the P are not in the correct position for the leg of an R.

A spur line is a very short railway branch line

Then again, who knows! They may have been mailing potatoes.
