I'm getting started on moving my Netherlands from old pages to Steiner and came across this one:

Does anyone have any idea what this "NES" is all about?

Thanks in advance,

Al

You could just Google "Nes" because it is a village on the Dutch island of Ameland! It is a cancel.

Thanks Peter!

Yeah, I could have done that; but you were faster than deleting all those spam emails I would have gotten from Holland America!

...besides, now everybody on here knows too, so thanks again!

Actually, there are two villages in Friesland called Nes.

The one for this cancel is on the mainland, on the north coast about 7 km NNE of Dokkum.

The one for Nes on Ameland says explicitly NES OP AMELAND.

I agree with Petert4522 that is is a town name (straight-line town cancellation).

This is the sub post office 'NES' of the Dokkum post office located between Wierum and Paesens/Moddergat. It opened 1 oktober 1870.

Scroll to "15a Kantoornaamstempels Naaldwijk t/m Nieuwdorp (ZL) kunt u hier bekijken."
Click on the word "hier" and go to page 21.

I believe this is the one Jan is referring to.
There are about five or six places called Nes.

The name refers to a headland that will have existed at those locations.
