Been cataloging recent acquisitions from Japan and have not been able to ID this one. My Japanese is very poor but translate hints at "silk" as a possible translation for one of the words but it doesn't seem to be a silk label. The bisected perforations are similar to what I have seen categorized as Declared Value stamp but this has lead to no leads. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, as mentioned by vayolene (with a link to related topic), this is a cash envelope seal used for value declared mails.

This green version is issued on September 1st, 1937 (Showa 12). Sold for 1 Sen per 5 copies.
The latest catalogue on Japanese Revenue Stamps by Hasegawa (2019) lists this as catalogue number "PB 5" under category "Cash Envelope Seals (1901-1962)".

Similar design but imperforated version (issued 1944, catalogue number "PB 6") also exits but far less common.

Thanks Hironobu for the additional info. I did have some additional questions if you could clarify. I have another seal in addition to the one above that is similar in color and design but is square in shape instead of rectangular. Were these issued at the same time? I have seen purple seals, also similar designs to each other, one square and one rectangular that some sources indicate are from the same year. I presume the sizes are to accommodate different size envelopes possibly.

Hi,

The green, square ones are from later issue (from 1952), where the imprint has been changed to "Gen-Kin Fu-Kan-Shi" = Cash Seal. Also note that the writing direction has changed to left-to-right (modern style).

1952: rectangular (similar to your first example), without perfins.
1953: same design as 1952 but with perfins,
1954: square with perfins (the one you've posted) - there's two types, e.g. native japanese paper (Wa-Shi) or normal (western paper).
1962: smaller, rectangular (close to square) with perfins.

Catalogue values are very modest, but may take time to collect all types, both unused and used - so have fun !

Hi Hironobu,

Would you mind clarifying the dates for me as I'm a little confused. The green square seal in the second photo is from 1954 and the green rectangle seal from the first and second photo is from 1953? In your first comment you had said 1937 so I just wanted to clarify since I think I'm getting my dates mixed up.

Thanks

Anthony

Hi, sorry for the confusion- I meant "your first example " to refer to your first post, e.g. the 1937 version.

The imprints of 1937 issue and.1952/53 issue are completely different, and this should be the most straightforward way to distinguish the two.
