I was reading " 100 Greatest American Stamps" (Janet Klug/Don Sundman) and found the story of the #122 on cover fascinating. Does anyone here know the back story of how the cover ended up in the hands of the "elderly couple" that tried to sell it 39 years after it was stolen? Internet searches haven't helped much.

BTW, great book!

Here is a link to Siegel Auctions sale of the Ice House Cover and there is a detailed history in the catalog.

Thanks for that info. The description of the cover's journey makes me marvel that mail could actually make it half way around the world intact while being exchanged between so many different carriers.

Still wonder if anyone ever knew who had stolen it and how it came into the possession of the innocent couple. Maybe there's an FBI file on it but that's probably sealed still.
