I found I have a copy of the 1871 1d rose-red Sideface with '10' watermark.

Sadly, the perfs have been trimmed on two sides.

The watermark is reversed, so that, from the front, it appears as '01.'

This is not listed in my Gibbons, however. I'd be interested in knowing whether a reversed watermark variety has been sighted before.

Hi jimjamtwo,

I'm sure the introductory note regarding watermarks at the beginning of Australia in Gibbons covers these.

Thanks, Bobby, but you're thinking of inverted, not reversed!

Just found a used copy (but with full perfs) listed here:

https://www.empirephilatelists.com/...-used-scarce

So at least one used copy is known.

So they printed it on the wrong side of the sheet...

I'm thinking there's a suggestion that this variety is rare?

The paper was provided by New South Wales and Hutson makes no mention of watermark varieties for the NSW 10d DLR issued in 1867.

Might be worth keeping an eye out here, as the Basset-Hull book appears to be being digitised:
