I just found these in a club auction lot of Diego-Suarez stamps I bought a few years ago for about $4. There must have been a bit of a mix-up, since these are not from Madagascar!

I just thought they were interesting and I wanted to share.

"Paid At Dominica":

Another "Paid at Dominica":

"1862 BARBADOES" over "Paid At Dominica":

Don't know if they are worth any money, but keeping them anyhow,

Al

Hi BreefmackUSA,

The 2022 Stanley Gibbons catalogue prices the Dominica crown circle datestamp at £600 on cover.

Nice find and certainly worth keeping

Thank you Bobby!

I actually just received my 2024 Scott Classic Specialized Catalogue in the mail this morning and the "Paid At Dominica" Crown Circle in Red is listed there at $600 on cover as well. Too bad all of these are cut-ups! It goes on to say that these were in use beginning in 1845 in Red, and then also a stamp cancellation from 1874-1883 in Black.

I'm still curious about the 3rd one. Wondering how the Black Barbados 1862 date stamp, which has no trace of a crown, would have ended up over the Red Dominica - does that just indicate that it went where it was going VIA Barbados and they had stopped using their own Red Circle & Crown by that date?

As far as I'm aware the latest known date of the Paid at Barbados crown circle datestamp is 1857.

My best guess is that the Barbadoes 1862 datestamp is a transit postmark, applied before departure to Great Britain. When I was studying this area 13 years ago the latest date of use I had recorded for that datestamp was 1857. It's known that it was replaced in 1863 so it's nice to see the period of use extended to what should be expected.

They are valuable but not the way most people think .

They belong in the hands of a expertizing committee or a person who expertizing covers from the British Caribbean ,I have no trouble believing they are real and should be put in a reference library .

I agree with floortrader. I can't see any evidence of fakery.

Perhaps hi-res scans could be provided to the WIPSG?

I checked out your link, Bobby, but don't see anywhere to submit content or an email address for contacting folks there. Any suggestions?

The original scans are at 1200 DPI and I haven't done the reverse sides, but nothing remarkable there, except two of them were apparently hinged with semi-modern stamp selvage. The 2nd one, on the blue paper, is a little weird. What appears to be tears from the top to the top-Left and then down to the bottom right is actually the edge of what seems to be vellum adhered to the blue paper underneath. Was there ever early attempts at making envelopes semi-water-resistant by layering the paper with vellum?

...but anyway, I would be happy to send the original scans to them, if you have a contact person.

Disregard the need for a contact - I found the email address of the editor and fired-off a quick note:
