Here's a nice Civil War cover that someone gifted to me. In Weiss's nomenclature, the design is a "Male Holding Flag and Flag Points to the Left." It appears to be a version of M-L68, but with the verse "Onward" instead of "Forward." I can't make out the exact year on the postmark, but it was May 17, 186?. The sender added the words "To Texas" after "Onward," which makes me wonder if this was a late Civil War cover since Union soldiers did not arrive in Texas in any significant numbers until June 1865. The recipient was Charles Earl Carpenter of Providence, RI. He and his father ran an ice house there.

My experience is that patriotics were generally used early in the war, before the general public understood how messy the war was.

I agree. The overwhelming majority seem to be circa 1861, plus or minus a bit.

That's why patriotics with Black Jacks are pretty scarce.

Makes a lot of sense. Thanks for that insight.
