I was testing my first batch of Clarity on a variety of US and British stamps. Most of the British watermarks that I can find involve a crown. I was shocked when words seemed to appear on the back of this King Edward VII half penny. It almost looks like a postage menu. I have not found this watermark in my searching. I have a good North American postal book, but I do not have a book on British stamps to compare. Does anyone have a suggestion for a reference on this watermark that I can review?

I am still working on my photo setup, but I think you can make out the important details.
thanks

What you are seeing is *not* a watermark, but instead peeled off the message side of a picture postcard, which has been thinned by the stamp's removal. It will float away when soaked.

Add: here are some examples from unused postcards, One from the U.K. at top and three typical U.S. examples below.

hmmm
If I was not clear, this is not visible to the naked eye. It is only visible with the Clarity.

I would expect that if this was ink transfer from a postcard, it would be visible to the naked eye.

Interesting. Is there a forum for British picture postcards?

It is about the journey and history of the stamp.
thanks

King Edward VII stamps only come with the imperial Crown Watermark. If you find anything else, it cannot be a watermark of a genuine postage stamp.

Interesting the text was not visible to the naked eye.

The cancel is for Hampstead in the northwest district of London.

The OP's image in reverse.

The stamp is faded, damaged and discoloured. A great example for an experiment.

Follow John Becker's advice
