While I will defend some aspects of grading, how could the PF give this dog a 90? The horrible cancel drops it below an 80 IMO,

pulled perfs have to go all the way down to the bottom of the perf holes, those are just shorter and I would only call one of them actually short. A much smaller detraction than the obscuring cancel. |

Where is that definition published? Both perfs are pulled based on the pattern of the separation line at the tip of each perf. |

Those perfs are not "pulled", they are just a bit short. Pulled means there is some small paper loss at the base of the perf in question. |

I agree with revcollector. Short or shortish, not pulled. Imo. 85, and I will add I am not a fan of grading either. |

The first two are short perfs, not pulled perfs. The last one comes the closest, and can be thought of as a pulled perf. Although I would probably call that a "perf fault" if I was describing this stamp. |

Correct me if I am wrong, but why would someone incur the expense of a certificate for a common stamp. I might also ask for a copy of that cert. if the OP could post it. |

Revcollector- I think the upshot of this is that others beside me seem to use "pulled perf" as a general term vs. short or shortish perf. There are many other examples of torn corners referred to as pulled perfs on ebay. Go figure. |

In large part, my terminology usually comes from years of talking with people who had decades of experience as stamp describers with major auction houses who later had decades of experience doing expertizing. So I generally use the terms they would have used on a cert. |

I have never heard a formalized definition of what constitutes a pulled perf.
This has been very useful, thanks. |

Subpar aesthetics notwithstanding (neither PF not PSE apparently factor in subjective characteristics into their grading; centering is the only thing that matters), I don't see that top-bottom centering as being sufficient for a 90. Also, the design being at a skewed angle from the perforations should be a negative characteristic IMO. That said, I do think it is a J... which oddly doesn't appear to be referenced. EDIT: It is a J. Link: http://pfsearch.org/pfsearch/pf_grd...lledfrom=lkp |

"I don't see that top-bottom centering as being sufficient for a 90." Well said Rev. Not even close.
This whole grading thing is absurd and a money grab. Not that I'm some purist and the do-all/end-all of philately; far from it and never will be; but the whole grading thing is just stupid. It is (in my opinion) just a way for the agencies to make money on people who think they are going to cash out on high grades. I see this garbage all the time on Facebook where people are trying to sell "graded 98" US stamps for $40 from stamps issued in 1962 when they are generally good for postage and not much else. Sad, really. |
