I've never purchased stamps for collecting purposes, but I have enjoyed them indirectly from online pics and reading. However, my great grandfather was pretty hardcore into it, and since he died in 1974 we've held onto his stamp collection out of appreciation and remembrance of him. My main hobby is actually espresso machines, but recently I decided to take a closer look at the collection after my grandparents dug out his album and brought with them on their yearly visit to me.

My goal being on this forum is to share what he amassed over the years, and better understand and appreciate what he has. I know some of the stuff he has is uncommon, but I'm still relatively new myself in understanding it fully. I hope others will enjoy what I share!

If these stamps are real, as they appear to be, you have some quite valuable stamps. It would be good to have larger images of one or two of each different stamp. Can you scan them?

Yes, I will be taking higher resolution pictures. I am still acclimating myself with stamp terminology and I want to make sure I handle the physical stamps correctly before proceeding. The book itself that contains the stamps is a few hundred pages, but it is about half filled with various US types, ranging from the early 1845 Postmaster Provisional stamp to the 1960's airmail and letter stamps.

The first thing that stood out to me as I was going through some websites was the stamp location from a sheet. Stamp placement in a 100/200 sheet is quite something to read about, and looking at some of the other topics I am quite impressed how such small details separate stamps that at first glance look the same. The Scotts stamp number is pretty intimidating at first, but hopefully I can get used to it over time.

There will be better methods to capture pics of the stamps, but here are a few other pages and specific stamps I thought were pretty interesting

The actual book itself is pretty hefty, but as stated earlier is not 100% filled. Some pages do not contain the stamps that are stated to be on the page either. When it's not being opened there are rubber bands stretched over to keep the book tight. I also have many of the original invoices my great grandfather sent to his dealer when acquiring new stamps. The little messages on each one are nice to read stating the status of the order or other small chats

Oiman,

Enjoy having fun with stamps! That is the name of this game. Wonderful you are carrying on your father's collection. You are the next steward of a family treasure you can pass on to future generations. Its value as a family heirloom wil always surpass it monetary value.

Collecting for the enjoyment of collecting, whatever that might be, is the name of the game. Don't hesitate to ask questions especially if you need basic information and especially more advanced sources of information for any possible topic. You should be able to find folks on this board a little further along on their collecting journey glad to share experiences.

My personal bias is a used stamp loses the story of its journey in the postal service when it is removed from the cover it transported to its destination. Collecting postal history adds a whole new aspect to your journey in our hobby.

Wishing you many enjoyable future days in our hobby. Russ
