Question from a non-philatelist: is there any way to assign a specific year to this cover? If not, how closely can the year of mailing be estimated? It was mailed from Manhattan to Manhattan in the late 19th century. The Jackson definitive was first used in 1878/79 but I don't know how long it was in common use. Are there any clues in the postmark? I know who the recipient is; she was at this address for many years in the 1870s-1890s. Thanks.

A bit newer than my area of expertise, but the '80' down low between the cancels indicates 1880, I'm fairly sure.

I agree with txstamp, 1880. It is an unexpected arrangement of the date elements, but fairly common.

And also correct methodology ... when many of the cancels of the 1870s and 1880s do not contain year dates ... that one can only narrow a use down to a range based on the stamp issuance date, the rate, the cancel style, the sender/recipient, and any other clues unique to a given item.

Thanks very much. 1880 fits other data. If I can ask a followup, does the "D" on the face cancellation or the "G" and "TP" on the back provide any clues for where in Manhattan the letter was postmarked?

Station D and Station G.
Although the address for station G in the 1882 postal guide isn't very close to the destination. It may be more of a mark applied in transit.
