Something about the cancel bothers me. The circular date portion doesn't appear contiguous from the stamp to the cover, as if the stamp was placed on the cover as a manufactured piece. This also makes me question the fancy cancel.

shermae: It looks like the stamp was once lifted (to determine the grill?) and then placed again. However, a little too high and a little too far to the right.

Dr. Kohler thanks for the confirmation. If the "R" in York is put back together, the rest of the cancel seems like it would not fit together. Is this kind of thing commonly done with grills on covers?

Confirmation for stamp lifted, not confirmation for any fakery.
This is the stamp (rudimentarily) shifted back to its original position. Looks good to me.

The cancel looks fine, lifting a stamp is done all the time to check grills or watermarks.

Yes, would it not have been nice if whoever had the stamp previously lifted, had written down the measurements result on an archival quality piece of paper and put it inside the envelope, at least as a starting point. Have yet to see it have happened in 50+ years (though I'm sure it's been done once or twice).
