Lindseyr702, I can see your predicament. I have been collecting stamps since year 1 ( seems that way at least ) and since the mid 50's I have been using DAVO albums for my country collections ( Netherlands, Switzerland, USA ). I also had a collection of Japanese Occupation of the Dutch East Indies, which did not fit in any over the counter album. I made my own from scratch!
In 1980 I got tired of my USA collection - too many issues. I started collecting the then brand new Plate Number Coils, and for years an album for those was not available. So I again made my own, this time using the Album Easy format. My Plate Number Coils are now my main interest, and I have twenty albums for my Transportation Coils!
One piece of advice: If at this point you don't know what to do just keep doing what you have been doing. Look at what others are doing and try to find something that you like. Sooner or later you will get an idea that you really love and stick with!
Good luck and happy stamping,

Peter

I would really love to do something like that but I don't yet know where I'm going with my collection ... The hard part about being a newbie is that, because I don't have much information about my stamps or their history yet, I wouldn't even know where to start with a layout...

Welcome to the "dark side" of making your own album pages! As a newbie, don't be intimidated by the task. I mentioned to you in another thread that there are some jaw-dropping pages here that make mine look pretty vanilla! Remember, if you choose to make your own pages, it is your collection and you can say as much or as little as you want about a stamp and you can arrange them however you find pleasing. There aren't any stamp police.

I've been collecting for a long time and accepted the fact that I'm never going to know everything about my stamps. I am always finding new information, different approaches to collecting, and subtleties that I didn't know existed before. For me, that's part of what making collecting stamps interesting and so much fun!

Take some time and learn about your collection. At some point you will say, "OK, that's what I want to say about my stamps."

Personally, my goal is for a non-collector or someone who doesn't specialize in my kind of stamps to flip through my albums and get an inkling of why I was crazy enough to spend time doing this! That may not be what you want to accomplish. Again, it is up to you!

You don't have to take a cookie-cutter approach either. You are highlighting your collection, not making a mass production product. Sure, paper, font, font size and the other basics should be consistent but you can be creative with the layout. Sometimes you might want to highlight paper type, gum, perforation, color variations or some other aspect of your stamps. Experiment!

Whatever you choose to do, have fun and remember it's a hobby.

Experienced stamps need a home too. I'd rather have an example that is imperfect than no example.
I collect for enjoyment, not investment.

@Peter - Wow, that's a long time of collecting - I bet your collection is amazing!

@puzzler - wow! Those are gorgeous!

@dan - I just want to thank you for always taking the time to help me out and give pointers and advice, I really appreciate it! I feel the same way about what I want non-collecters to see. If all I do is have a page full of stamps with no information, it's not going to be very interesting to many people! I think I will start with very basic pages and then as I learn more about them, I can make specialized pages for the really good ones!

Lindseyr,

Thank you for your comments.

That is pretty much my approach as well. The areas that I collect first get put into albums. (I use Mystic for US and Steiner pages for the rest.) When a topic or an area catches my fancy, I fire up the computer and work on specialized pages.

Your collection is already in albums so you are one step up! Work with what you have, expand it and see where you go.

There are some pretty advanced collectors on SCF.(I'm not one) Don't be intimidated. I've never found a better forum for asking questions and getting helpful, informed replies.

Pretty soon you will be just as opinionated as the rest of us!

The key word there is "yet"

Aside from the fact we all love stamp collecting, I can't think of a topic that can't generate some controversy here!

To resurrect a really old thread, I thought I would point out two programs to make easy work out of designing album pages:

1. Albumeasy was previously mentioned. Version 3.0 was recently released. http://www.thestampweb.com/
2. Stamp Page Creator. Full GUI for making your own album pages: http://stamppagetor.sourceforge.net/

Yes Albumeasy for my topical collections ( Expo 67, Tall ships and Europa after 1978).

About Albumeasy I remember spending a weekend learning the freeware and his feature. It's a learning process and you have to work on it to achieve what you want as an album page. Daniel

Nice looking stuff. I have AlbumEasy and created Pages for
INDIA from 1947 to 2012. Recently I have InDesign CS6 etc.
To day I saw all Utube vedios. For begginers.
I may try but I know it wont be that easy as Album Easy.

My most of Collection is in Vario sheets and Binders.
Some I have put in my Stock Books. It took me 5 and half months,
I would say almost to complete arranging. Though not fully complete.
Little more than 4 70-80 pound Suite cases.

@dvaldemoro beautiful I like it. did you do in InDesign ..?
