I have a mourning cover that has a nice clear VF Prince Albert stamp. Since it's on cover I'm not able to even get the perf count right without a shadow of a doubt. I have to assume that it's a Sc17 and not 16 but you just never know. The stamp in person does not appear to have red in the colour. I'm making a short list of stamps to send in to Greene and I wonder if this should go too. Hopefully they would know if it's an odd variety.

What do you mean by "not getting the perf count right" ? Try a perforation gauge

I have an aluminum, paper and clear plastic gauge. None of them have 11.75 and I'm not convinced it's a 12. Maybe it is.

It's definitely a 17, it can range in shade, whereas #16 is very distinctive - black brown. Personally see nothing unusual about it.

I'm fine with it being a 17. I'm starting to go through things that I haven't checked in a while before I sell everything.

The Toronto split ring, which is dated either '63 or '65, should guide you as to the ID. The black browns were the first printing orders of the stamp, issued July 1859. You generally don't see them postally used 4-6 years past issue.

The perf rate should be easy to determine on-cover. The tie of the diamond grid cancel isn't strong, but is believable enough. I'd bet the perfs are close to 12x12. The adhesive has almost certainly been there since it was applied.

Hello !
I'm not REALLY an expert but that definitely looks like a Scott #17
I have the same and it's approximately the same color so I don't think that there's a lot of different types of #17

This definitely looks like a #17. Still don't understand how it can be VF when it is missing a couple of perfs on the right side and at least one on the left.
