This cover arrived in my mail today and I immediately noticed the huge town portion of the spray. Is this a one-off clerk blooper to accidentally change the font size or is it being introduced elsewhere? The regular size wavy lines indicate that it was intended for letter-sized mail and not for flats, which do sometimes use a larger town-font with a larger killer area.

I do believe you are correct in assuming an error in processing. Which will make it unique. I just started collecting cancels again due to the spray format. Xmas ones caught my attention. I checked mine and found that they were of a smaller type and drawn out over a much larger area.

I have not heard of ant postal code change. Not that they inform us of things that quickly. Others may know if there was a postal change.
I'll have to keep my eyes peeled to see if any come in like yours to see if it's a new style or just a processing error.

Linns had some news on this some weeks ago. If I recall there was mention of 2 or 3 locations. I haven't seen any, and a postmark guru I know hasn't brought up the subject. I don't know enough about inkjet printers to have any certainty, but I suspect it is possible for a font size mishap to occur on part of what's printed. We ordinarily would suspect a size glitch affects the whole printing.

I have a November 4 from Wilmington DE on my desk. I don't think it's a mishap, but at least testing/experimenting in certain places if not new equipment.

Found it....Linn's reported the new markings in the October 14 issue on page 4. Jay Bigalke's "philatelic foreword". He shows a September 19 Ft. Wayne example. Linn's quoted postal service spokeswoman Sue Brennan as saying "we are simply working to improve postmark print quality and readability nationwide". The writeup also refers to an example from Springfield IL.
