If you are referring to the small circular dated cancel, it is a letter carrier marking. Pretty easy to find out information on these.

Thank you both. I was not aware of that website but I have it bookmarked now.
If I am reading the website correctly that is a Montreal carrier handstamp dated September 17, 1895
I find that strange on a letter sent from Prince Albert, Saskatchewan to Winnipeg , Manitoba.
What am I missing here?

Perhaps because it is a Winnipeg letter carrier marking?

I thought is was similar to...

Which the website identified as Montreal carrier handstamp
July 1, 1890.

I did not see a similar Winnipeg letter carrier marking listed.

The letter carrier handstamp is common design/used in many provinces. The date is September 17th, 3 days after being posted. Without seeing the back of the cover for any further postmarks- information, I assume it is the letter carriers handstamp when received or just before delivery after sorting.

Here is an absolutely crystal clear image of the cover's back (tongue in cheek).

So to identify the Carrier Hand Stamp you also have to have the receiving cancel as well to Identify it.

I' ve collected stamps for 65 years but started Canada Cover collecting about 6 months ago. It seems I've got a lot to learn.

Timm, the learning never ends. And there is always something new we can teach and learn from each other as collectors. Thats what makes this hobby interesting, and not just repetion. I have been collecting a little more seriously for 45 years and still have much to learn, understand and retain.

I too never stop learning. There is much social enjoyment and exchange of information still available through stamp clubs, but the research tools available online have expanded tremendously over the past twenty years. And, I am probably understating it when I use the word "tremendously".
