There was indeed a post office at Traverse des Sioux, Minnesota. It was discontinued in 1906, but it played a significant role during the early settlement period of the area.
Location: Traverse des Sioux was located on the Minnesota River, near the present-day city of St. Peter in Nicollet County. The exact location of the old settlement was about two miles upstream from St. Peter.
The site is currently a historical landmark, with the Nicollet County Historical Society Treaty Site History Center being located at or near the former site of Traverse des Sioux.
Historical Significance of the Post Office:
Traverse des Sioux was an important river crossing and trading post in the early days of Minnesota settlement. The post office was a vital communication link for early settlers and traders in the region.
It is also known as the location where the Treaty of Traverse des Sioux was signed in 1851.
This treaty resulted in the Dakota people ceding a vast amount of land to the US Government.
There are two postmarks (pre 1861) listed in the American Postal Markings Catalog (the successor to the American Stampless Cover Catalog). go to worldcovers.org; search Minnesota; filter for Sioux. C.
