I have a Phillippines stamp with either a cancelation or overprint. Has anyone seen this marking on similar stamps? Could it be private marking or precancel? Thanks.
Philippines #485. Issued 1945. Part of the last set of stamps issued under U.S. administration before the Philippines gained independence in 1946. Catalogs less than $1 for mint.
Oh, ok. My understanding is that there were a large number of O.B. styles, some written by hand. I don't know of there is a source that lists all known varieties. I have several myself that I just keep in a glassine.
An OB handstamp or overprint are just that, a printed overprint or an OB applied by a hand stamp. Yours is neither, it is a manuscript OB meaning someone wrote it by hand in pen.
Off of the cover, if in fact it was used to move a piece of mail, there is very little information to glean about usage, Official Business.
In general there is no price guide for the handwritten, manuscript. OB stamps when there is no indication of postal use. Value still under the minimum catalog price 25 cents which is the price for 485, unused, Mint NH and used.
