Hi All, I have many stamps of papua that I'm sifting through, can some explain the watermark orientation on sideways watermark crown over a stamps as viewed from the back.
this is 1916 1d perf 14 , crown over a sideways, crown is pointing to the right as seen from the back, am I right in thinking this is inverted watermark?
I can't see the watermark in your pictures. You may need to take a scan before the watermark fluid dries out. Or try another picture with brighter light from behind the stamp.
I didn't carefully check your identification, but if you're correct that this is the 1916-series stamp with an inverted sideways watermark, that is the SG94a, grey-black and red (1918), and with an inverted watermark, so SG94aw.
If that's correct, then it is in an interesting position. A mint copy of SG94aw catalogs about twice the SG94 and SG94a. A used example of SG94aw is about half the catalogue value of a used SG94 or SG94a.
Even with doubling or halving, there are not big monetary differences in the CV, but it is something interesting to look for.
If anyone wants to pipe up and correct any of the above, have at it.
