Egypt : Since the very first issue until 1914 (48 years)
there was a pyramid on every stamp but 1!

This sphinx issue has a strange marking, anybody have any suggestions?

It could be part of a slogan cancel, but I really don't know myself, but there's a collector of Egyptian stamps on ebay's Stamp chat that probably could. She specializes in early Egyptian stamps.

I'll mosey over to ebay and see if I can contact her.
thanks Will.

I have this impression that these were on postcards
for sale in bazaars around the pyramids in the early days,
the postcards were over printed <after>
the stamp was affixed with directions on where to place the stamp

(if that makes sense)

A friend of mine who is native Arabic speaker was kind enough to transliterate the Arabic inscription. The first line reads "Al-Posta" (i.e. "The Post") and the second one reads "...man Ad'arf". (the ' after the "d" means you nead to pronounce the "d" the way you pronunce the letter "t" hen you write "th")

The "...man" is an ending of a word and there is no way my friend could guess what that word (if not had been cut) meant. "Ad'arf" means an envelope. All in all it seams the Arabic inscription corresponds perfectly to the English one.

I found another remark made by my friend to be interesting: On the stamp itself (not the overprint) the letter "P" (used which does not exist in Arabic is represented by the Arabic "B" accompanied by three dots which signify to the Arab reader that it's a "P" and that the word comes from a foreign language.

Since Arabic is written from right to left it can be seen on the upper right hand side of the inscription.

Hope this helps (and hope I got the explanations right as Arabic is all Greek to me)...

My estimate

English "Postage stamp (applied) at top right-hand side of envelop"

Arabic as pronounced "Tabe' Al-Bosta fi al-nahiya al-olya min al-zarf min gihat al-yameen"

Hope this helps

Rod - I am pleased to know it helped a bit. I guess that from now on Arabic won't be such a trouble for any of us as long as EgCollector is around.
