The belief is the overprinted example is good, the normal is not. I have no clue so I am asking.

Monogram 'JP' in the lower right corner appears to be malformed in the right-hand example, and the whole design is even more askew than the left-hand one. |

Don't know- if the issue was produced using stone lithography, i.e. printed off a slab of Solnhofen limestone, defects in the process of laying the design down on the stone could account for the distortions evident in both examples. Got a feeling the process involves tissue paper to transfer the design. |

These stamps were not forged . Your second stamp was soaked in water too long or placed in hot water to get that ink flaking effect . |

Quote: Your second stamp was soaked in water too long or placed in hot water to get that ink flaking effect . Both stamps are mint with gum, so such damage from soaking would not have occured. The paper of both stamps is noticeably different, with the suspected forgery having a much bluer colour, not shown well in the image. Quote: These stamps were not forged . Interesting, so you believe it is just a poorly printed version of a slight design variation on the plate? I will post a comparison photo with the differences pointed out shortly. |

I strongly suspect that it's a forgery. Too many differences in letter shapes, the bird shapes, the anchor shape, etc. |

revcollector quote: Quote: I strongly suspect that it's a forgery. Too many differences in letter shapes, the bird shapes, the anchor shape, etc . Why would anyone have forged this stamp? It has minimum catalogue value. The catalogue shows it was printed typography black on green which doesnt show on either of the examples shown by Parcelpostguy |

Here are some details that lead me to believe this is a forgery, in addition to the differing paper: 1.Lack of details on bird's wings., 2.Different shape of scroll., 3.Different shape of scroll., 4.All 4 circular details on frame are blobby and misshapen., 5.Differing details inside scroll., 6.Lettering different, lacking some definition., 7.Rope and anchor different shape and lacking detail. Quote: The catalogue shows it was printed typography black on green which doesn't show on either of the examples shown by Parcelpostguy EDIT: I am guessing these are black and white, not color photos. <<<My guess being to better show design contrast with stamp paper. That was NOT a good nor useful guess. I realized I was wrong after being advised the four pictures I posted were all color photos. |

Quote: Why would anyone have forged this stamp? It has minimum catalogue value. I have to agree with the catalog value angle. And add, at 1c face value saving of postal costs is small as well. Considering those facts, one could almost guess if a forgery, someone was just practicing for little gain or to sell for album fillers. Edited: For better accuracy. |

Many inexpensive stamps from a wide range of countries have been forged, in part because stamps easily found today were sometimes difficult to get 100+ years ago. And the idea of collecting for the first 50 or 60 years was to fill every space in an album. So lots of forgeries around. |

And they were usually sold as forgeries for pennies, and lots of collectors got some. |
