Hello everyone!! I need your help with a group of King Luiz of Portugal period from the 1862-64 issue, specifically SC#13, SC#14, SC#16. The problem I'm having is that the paper is extremely hard and thick, like stationary cardboard... but I can't find anything about it... Sorry for the photos, but my computer has been broken for weeks...

I'm not an expert, but my Scott Catalog has footnotes mentioning "reprints of 1885 ... on stout very white paper". There is more information in the footnotes that may help determine if they are the reprints. "Value of lowest cost reprints, $10 each."

I value the option of reprint that Scottt points out, but it is really a hard and thick cardboard, very far from paper…

I also have a similar stamp which I actually did not purchase, but ended up in my collection. I had put it with cutouts from postal stationary.

All three stamps were superseded by new designs in 1866. Postal stationary with pre-printed franks tend to be from after that time. Although not impossible, it would be unlikely for the postal stationery to use an older design.

The first Portuguese stationery postcards were issued in 1878.
And no one exists with this kind of design.

Hello,

The 25 reis seems to have the hallmarks of the originals and the postmark is consistent with the period.

As to the reprints, they differ in color/shades.

I am not an expert, just reading a reference book on the first portuguese issues.

I just assumed, because of the thickness and the embossed design, that it was a cutout from stationary. My reply here was just me saying that, before seeing this thread, that is what I thought my stamp was, now, thanks to the existence of this thread, I know it is actually a stamp and I will now place it in the correct location.

It's a complex topic because none of my catalogs mention cardboard paper... On the left I show a cut-out example of stationary, on the right is one of the cardboard paper examples... notice how the back is written just like a stationary model...

Aren't your stamps on piece?
Looking at the bottom left corner of the first and third stamp and the bottom right one of the second stamp it seems to me they are on piece.

Cheers

I have indeed checked the small detail of the corners and it is more than likely that they have been placed on pieces of cardboard similar to that of stationery or stationery itself. Thank you very much for solving the enigma!!!

Maybe the stamps above are from letters like this:

Don't soak them, they were printed in fugitive ink.

Afinsa catalogs state "Papel, Liso, fino, médio ou espesso" which Google tells me means "Paper, Smooth, Thin, Medium or Thick". My guess on the originals would be "papel espresso".
