They came in different watermarks, and the book refers to them as Die 2 and Die 2B but I don't really understand
why I can't see a reference to Die 1.

This is a complex issue and is still not fully understood even by the experts. The use of the term Die I etc is actually a bit of a misnomer, as all the Kangaroo & Map series plates were produced from one master steel die. The different "die states" come about on the various plates that were prepared. They have continued to be called different Dies simply due to tradition and to avoid confusion.

Die I only occurred on the plates made for the ½d, 1d, 2d & 3d. So there is no Die I for any values higher than those.

As mentioned already, the bicoloured issues were printed using 2 plates, one with the map & value, and a common vignette plate. The bicolours are all Die II. They used the same plates across the different watermarks and even when the printer changed they still used the same plates, just substituted the monogram for Harrison's imprint.

Hope that helps a little.

Balf

Would you kindly step forward please

A major new discovery (and a slightly less major discovery) sighted at Australia 2013 in Melbourne.

You may all know the story of the KGV 1d Red single watermark sideways recently discovered in Soctland and presented for viewing and certification by Ian Perry at Australia 2013.

Here is the stamp:

Now certified genuine by Michael Drury and four others, expected sale price $100,000+.

I was there to view some very nice postage due displays and I only asked for stamps at one dealer, Jude Koch at Blue Owl Stamps. He ha a collection of Aussie dues and I picked this one out.

An average copy of SG D79 (a rare shade) but this is mint, no gum and toned.

Can anyone spot anything special? The watermark is sideways. I have not seen reference to any sideways watermarks on this stamp.

Jude looked at the stamp from all angles, checked price lists and catalogues, trying to gt a correct identification on the stamp, but he could not.

He said, "I'll ask Chris (Ceremuga who was viewing some of his stamps). Now, if you need a certificate for a stamp in Australia, Chris is the man to go to.

Damn, bargain opportunity missed.

Chris looked carefully, compared it with several other issues and pronounced it

A reperfed fake!!

A $5 curio for my collection.

I'll post comparison scans in the postage due section of the forum.

Not to start WW3 here but wasn't Blue Owl stamps just kicked out of the APTA for Shill bidding ? If I remember the story correctly the Wife was buying common Australian Stamps and the Husband was faking OS Perfins on them and they got caught. Then the shill bidding was found when the same address was listed for the Seller and auction winner ?

It was him but he was suitably chastened by his peers. I'm satisfied he is back on the straight and narrow.

In my opinion, Blue Owl should have been ejected from every professional body he's a member of.

He didn't get any of my hard-earned money over the last few days.

I'm still wondering where IS the right place for the discussion. I think this thread is perfect as it was KGV and Roo material he faked. However, I'll butt out of the discussion here, as I have elsewhere, as I'm clearly swimming against the tide on this issue!

i don't know Blue Owl, so the following is a general opinion, and not a statement about the man.

A dealer who has been caught faking material may well be chastened, and may be completely safe to deal with thereafter...but he should not be entitled to the benefit of the doubt any longer, and future buyers should know that extra scrutiny might be warranted. I understand that this sounds like a scarlet letter.

Some people are caught and thereafter take the straight and narrow; others figure out how to be more clever next time.

Leaving all affiliations in place seems to make a decision on behalf of future unwitting buyers that they should take the risk that the seller has chosen the better path, without the buyers knowing that they are making that decision.

My 2d.

Nice thread save, moldman. Back on track with a great scan showing the flaw. I'll save this pic for later.

Nice Pair Moldman. The Aussie KGV in my humble opinion are the most addicting stamp for finding flaws on. Lord knows how many hours I've spent staring at every little detail on 100's of KGV's.
