I was hoping to find a sticky here which gives a good summary on Cinderellas. I understand that they are not real stamps in the sense that they have no postal value. But at the same time they are not meant to be counterfeits. So they are for collectors, but not for postage. Hmmm. So who is making them? Are governments making them to raise extra money or is it just anyone who is trying to make a buck? And how do they get into circulation amongst stamp collectors if they are not real stamps? Why do people even want to collect them?
I realize these are probably obvious questions to some, but I am just trying to get a better understanding. I have read wikis and so forth, but nothing really answers the above questions in a straight forward way.
I would love to hear people's thoughts on them.
Cheers..

askphil: Alternative Philately: collateral material other than regular postage stamps; such as cinderellas. marc use this frequently, it is the well of knowledge, sip deeply, often. http://www.askphil.org/IMPORTANT: go to "reference library" then navigate to "glossary of terms" Most all of philately hides in there somewhere. |

Marc, from my limited understanding of this fascinating area of stamp collecting, this is what I have seen and learned.
They are issued by different companies for different raesons. The overall theme is that they are not printed by postal issuing entities (gevernments) for reasons of leveeing a fee and showing prepayment for services rendered (postage stamps) or the collecting of a tax (revenue stamps).
So, that leaves everyone else. I suppose that some do print them just to make a buck, but it is why the buck is made and what the buck is paying for that makes some of them fascinating.
For instance, Red Cross ladies organizations have issued some in aid of helping the wounded and sick.
Others are issued to show prepayment (like a postage stamp) of a delivery service, strike delivery labels, private courier services.
Or to show support for a person (King George VI coronation),
to help celebrate an idea or person or event (stuck on correspondence or envelopes to help advertise the idea, etc.
To raise funds for stamp clubs or other clubs and organizations,
As propaganda by different governments and organizations.
Say, for the current World Cup in South Africa. Countries and governments themselves have issued and will probably issue more stamps dealing with this theme, to celebrate their involvement in it and to also make a buck (countries with small populations or countries printing more stamps than are needed to cover the demand) (which is most countries now-a-days).
But there will also be folks issuing stamps and labels and stickers etc etc to help people who are really interested in the theme or country or idea show their support and enjoy their involvement. And if they are printed for 1 cents but distributed and sold for $3 or some other amount, that is makng a buck.
There are all kinds of classifications and areas as you can imagine (and probably can't also).
There, that is a take on it from a collector who doesn't really collect them. Oh yeah, there is the collecting bug or it's another thing to organize and sort and create order with. We all fit in there to some degree.

Thank you for all the good feedback and input everyone. I will read those links as well. As for the wildlife conservation stamps, those are not quite what I was referring to. Most of the ones I have/seen have actual postal values on them and are mimicking actual postal stamps and can be passed off as postage stamps to the unknowing. |

Cinderellas can take many forms Marc, phantasies, locals, bogus, poster stamps, forgeries, illegals (probably what you are referring to) As a lot of the minisheets in that Bat thread Turkmenistan etc.

Personally I have bought a lot of topical sheets of famous people icons of the 20th century. All appear as real stamps and the number of countries reaches all continents. Many from African countries and some from South America, SE Asia and pacific islands as well. |

It becomes more complicated too, I think, by US being able to issue our own postage now. |
