Almost EVERY box cancel is wider than a definitive stamp, so any well-centered strike will not show the ends of the box. It is indeed a "standard cancel" from a postal office perspective, a standard box cancel, which nearly every office had. You seem to be trying to classify everything as a precancel first instead of the other way around. As you get deeper into this, you will find that most precancel collectors also accumulate roller and box cancels to have as references, although I don't have a Walton in mine.
Add: and yes, the short town names can often be foolers. Image this one from Knox struck squarely on a stamp. Fortunately, the text in most box cancels is too wide and becomes a quick determiner.
