This stamp's certificate states it shows a re-entry, catalogued as #99i. As Unitrade only lists a #99, 99a and 99ii, I am wondering if anyone can tell me what this re-entry is. Thank you.

Unitrade 2010 lists a 99i as re-entry in 1908 and BEC (position 81) - "confirmation requested" in lieu of pricing.

Re-entry is defined in my Fundamentals of Philately as a normal process in line engraving printing where after a plate is tested and lines may not transfer perfectly it is reworked.

p. 221: "... in the case of an incomplete transfer, the plate would probably be returned to the transfer press, and the relief entered again at the offending position. The keying of the transfer relief with the recesses of the entry is normally accomplished without difficulty by the almost uncanny skill of the siderographist, who is said to "feel" the relief into place. When perfectly done, this operation - which is referred to as "re-entry" - leaves no effect on the plate to denote what has been caried out. In the vast majority of cases when re-entry is carried out - and it is effected innumerable times as a matter of course in the production of line-engraved printing bases - it is perfectly done."

If not done perfectly there may be doubled lines. These are known as "non-coincident re-entries." There are another 3 pages of discussion of errors, misalignments, etc, and the fixes to them. This is not a book printed for the TicTok generation.I also don't doubt there are other members here who could give a 3 hour presentation on the process.

I assume the cert is saying there is a visible re-entry in your specimen. I highly doubt this would be the cause for its own variant Scott number since as I read it this could occur on any line-engraved stamps, which is to say almost all of them up to a point. I don't have a Scott Classic Specialized Catalog for variants.

Enlarging Riley111's stamp, I do not see the recorded re-entries in the '9' of 1908 or the 'C' of BEC, so do not understand the 99i designation. I do see one known re-entry in the right of the stamp, a small horizontal line (see below). Additionally there are marks in 'PO' of POSTAGE, 'C' of CENTS, the UR '5', the upper 'de' and the 'B' of the upper "QUEBECQ'.

We can't really see from the image provided. We need a better image. The re-entry may be referring to the un-erased guidelines that are sometimes present on this series. see re-entry.,com (Ralph's web site for more details)

Ralph's website is now archived at

https://re-entries.greenefoundationarchive.ca/

Ralph discusses this stamp in detail at

https://re-entries.greenefoundation...uebecterc_5c

He notes that there are no known re-entries, and his examples all show that small dot on the right side, as noted with the arrow above.
