Quote: I presume that Carlos Velamazán is the same as Carlos Velamazán Perez who engraved the 50c and 3p of the 1964 Spanish navy set? Yes, he is the same engraver. Velamazán is his first surname (father's surname) and Pérez is his second surname (mother's surname). This stamp with Don Quixote (Stamp Day 1947) was engraved by Carlos Velamazán Pérez too: In this case with secret mark "V": |

And do you know if he's related to Eduardo Velamazán Perez who also engraved two values of the navy set? Love the secret mark, thanks for showing it! |

Yes, he is his brother.
Eduardo Velamazán Pérez (1914-1999) He joined FNMT in 1947 and retired in 1982
Their full names were...
Eustaquio Carlos Velamazán Pérez Cipriano Eduardo Velamazán Pérez
Both brothers used their middle names as if it was the first name. I guess they considered them more "cool". Eustaquio and Cipriano are very outdated names, almost ridiculous. |

The cinderellas shown on the previous page are a genteel lot mostly but one stands out as being different. I didn't know the story behind this one so I went looking. I only needed to get as far as Wikipedia to find what I wanted. The stamp is based on an earlier engraving and is very similar. Victor Hugo was a Romantic and his play was seen as attacking the opposing Classicists. Both sides turned up in force for the premiere and in the interval, the fight broke out. Sort of like an early version of Mods and Rockers when I was a kid. No doubt there is a modern equivalent. Read the whole story here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hernani_(drama) |

Thanks jorgesurcl, you've made my day. That is the first Ecuador stamp I've been able to attribute to an engraver.
Ecuador engraved stamps are beautiful but finding out any details has proved almost impossible. |

Jorgesurcl, you have made my day once again. I have had that sheet from the "Philatelic Truck" for some time and not been able to find the engravers. I think it is amazing that they used a forty year old engraving for the vignette though perhaps that was cheaper than having a new one done.
The truck was the idea of President Roosevelt, himself a philatelist, and it toured America as part of a travelling philatelic exhibition. Amazingly, the sheets were printed at each town they visited but I have never seen any way of identifying which town was the source of individual sheets. The engraving is superb and shows what can be achieved when quality is more important than price. |

It was a fairly sombre night at my stamp club last night due to us all having attended the funeral of our secretary/treasurer the day before who had died suddenly. Nevertheless, by the end of the night I'd managed to find a few gems on the exchange sheets, some of which will have been shown before but all are worth another airing. I haven't researched them all yet so details will be scanty but here they are. The first is one I have been seeking for some time and is the Monaco stamp depicting the "three graces". I was surprised at how large a stamp it is, at least four times the size of the similar United States stamp, but for me, this was the prize of the night. The Three Graces engraved by Pierre Albuisson. Some fine stamps from Greenland, the first by Arne Kuhlmann. more to come... |
