Quote:
Saint John of God (1495-1550), Portuguese-born friar and saint, helping ill man, designed by Martins Barata, and issued on October 30, 1950 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the saint's death, Scott No. 1725, SG No. 1043. St. John of God is the patron saint of hospitals, the sick, nurses, firefighters, alcoholics, and booksellers.

Your scan of this stamp appears to show a remarkable re-entry at the bottom of the stamp - the engraver and designer names appear to be doubled. Is this just a scanning artifact or does it actually show on your stamp? Note also that your Scott numbers for these Portuguese issues are out by 1000, this one is Scott #725.

Ryan - Good eye! The two names are distorted on the stamp itself; it is not a scanning artifact. And thanks for catching my typos on the Scott Nos., which I have now corrected. In my image naming system, the Scott No. follows the country name, and in this case the "l" in Portugal must've looked like a "1" to me at the time I was writing this post up. - nethryk

Mihály Füle (1914-2005) was a Hungarian painter and engraver who produced stamps for Hungary during the 1950s and 60s. Here are images of four examples of Füle's work, all stamps designed by Zoltán Nagy.

Hi to all, I've only just found your forum!

I'm a hand engraver, working and living in the UK. I am so pleased that you appreciate the work of these engravers. I research engraving a lot, but I must say, these stamp engravers were the masters of their art. Unfortunately, these skills are soon to be lost for ever. Once again, thanks for highlighting engraving.

Please review the rules.

I also just found this forum yesterday, and feel it is one of the most valuable discussions on the web. However it seems a clumsy way to display so much great material even with the index.

My real interest is Eugene Mouchon and Rod222's original and subsequent posts. Although the story of the death mask is charming (see page 2) I think the real reason he stopped designing was failing eyesight which meant that revised modifications to the Sower had to be done by someone else.

Leon Schnell (1888-1961) was a German etcher and engraver who produced stamps for Germany in the 1940s and 50s. Here are images of five examples of Schnell's engraving work on stamps designed by various artists and issued by various German regimes.

José Moreno,(Born in Spain in 1905 and died in Chile in 1981). The greatest engraver of Chile's stamps.

Thanks to nethryk who recommend me put this information here.

I will upload pictures with better definition later. I must to learn how to do it.

All the best !

José from Chile

He worked for important institutions of Spain, France, U.K. and Argentina. For instance the prestigious Waterlow and Sons on U.K.
Arrived to Chile in 1931, working for over 45 years and showing his artistic talent on the engraved issues of banknotes and postal stamps, increasing the prestige of "Talleres de Especies Valoradas", in that time the institution in charge of manufacturing of them in Chile (now is called Casa de Moneda) and creating a school of engravers around him.

The year 1945 was the period when our postal stamps had become to the highest level of quality and beauty, obtaining a well deserved world reputation, thanks to the José Moreno's talent.

Here some beauties:

Hello and welcome, José. I've long been wondering who my Chilean stamps dating back to the 1950s-1960s were engraved by. Thank you for your first post.

Hi, GrahamS, and welcome to this thread. We, lovers of finely engraved stamps, are most thankful to all those who let us see the beauties of this slowly disappearing art in greater detail.
Could you be more specific about reviewing the rules? Of course, I am certainly not the one to ask this question being just an inexperienced viewer.

Hi, merlintosa, and welcome to this thread.
Agreed that the discussions here are most valuable and the material displayed is truly great.
Have you got any specific suggestions? Not that I could judge them as to their feasibility but others certainly could.
I appreaciate your insight on Eugene Mouchon's work.
What engraved stamps down to 1949 besides Mouchon's particularly appeal to you?
