They are philb. That must have been great to meet him as he sounds from all accounts to have been an interesting guy. I think Slania did a great job on capturing Patterson who was included twice for his two separate titles. |

Jacques Derrey (1907-1975) was a French painter and engraver. Many of the stamps he produced were issued by former French colonies during the 1960s. Here are images of five examples of his work, all stamps designed and engraved by Derrey, except as noted. - nethryk Lumberjacks, airmail stamp issued by Congo (People's Republic) on May 12, 1964 to publicize the timber industry, Scott No. C17. Unloading mail, 1900, issued by Ivory Coast on April 24, 1965 for Stamp Day, Scott No. 227. Malian Pioneers initiation, issued by Mali on July 25, 1966, Scott No. 54. Mail boat, postage due stamp designed by Pierre Béquet, and issued by Dahomey (now Benin) on October 24, 1967. Weaver, issued by Burkino Faso (formerly Upper Volta) on October 30, 1968, Scott No. 191. |

nethryk - Thanks for these works by Jacques Derrey (whose name I have never come across so far) splendidly interpreted by French printers.
Your contribution to the evaluation of the postage stamp as a world cultural heritage site is great, indeed.
It is a pity that some of the former contributors to this thread might be prevented by personal circumstances from continuing to take part in it. |

florian - You're welcome, and thanks for the compliment. Yes, it sure would be great if more collectors would contribute stamp images and/or informative posts in this thread. Here are images of three examples of the engraving work of Japanese engraver Senkichi Mizutani, about whom I currently have no further information. Each stamp was designed by a different Japanese artist, and issued by Japan. - nethryk Wakato Bridge, a suspension bridge in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka, Japan, opened on September 26, 1962, designed by Minoru Hisano, and issued on the same date, Scott No. 768. Rifle shooting, designed by Masaru Kimura, and issued on October 21, 1962 to publicize the 17th National Athletic Meeting, Okayama, Scott No. 771. Modern pentathlon, semi-postal stamp designed by Hideo Hasebe, and issued on June 23, 1964 to raise funds for the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Scott No. B28. |

nethryk - According to the New Issues pages of the Czechoslovak fortnightly Filatelie back in the 1960s the Japanese engraver's full name was Senkichi Mizutani. |

Last December, lithograving posted an image of a Christmas stamp engraved by Austrian engraver Gerhart Schmirl (1942- .) Schmirl studied at the National Technical School in Steyer, and joined the Austrian National Bank in 1972. From 1982-87 he attended master classes in drawing under Professor Otto Zeiller. Schmirl has engraved both banknotes and postage stamps for Austria. Here are images of three more stamps designed by various Austrian artists and combined engraved by Schmirl and photogravure. - nethryk Alfred Hermann Fried (1864-1921), Austrian Jewish pacifist, publicist, journalist, co-founder of the German peace movement, and winner (with Tobias Asser) of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1911, designed by Otto Zeiller, and issued on November 10, 1989, Scott No. 1484. This great thread is still going strong and I have been enjoying it as a spectator all along, but the time has come for me to rejoin the posting. The main reason for this is that there is only one of JAC Harrison's stamps in all of these 65 pages. Born in 1872 JACH (as he was called) engraved right to the end in 1955. He engraved for many countries apart from Great Britain; here is an incomplete list (please add any I have left out) : Downey heads ; June 22 1911 Re-engraved Downeys January 1 1912 August 1912 2d KGV 1912—13 rest of definitive series 1914 Sea horses (Waterlow) 1920 Cook for Cook Islands (Rarotonga) 1922 Independence centenary for Brazil 300 I 1924 Velasco Costa Rica 2c 1924-25 Morazan Salvador 35 c 1924-5 BE Exhibiton Wembley 1d and 1.5d 1924 UPU stamp 1 Pound 1924-5 3 Commem issues for Portugal (Camoens, Branco and Marquis de Pombal 1926 Arms of Malta high values also prob his work 1926KGV in full dress for NZ 2s and 3s 1926 The Sprinbook (0.5d) and Van Riebeck's ship (1d) and the orange tree (6d) for South A. 1926 Spanish red cross issue Royalty 1926 Dr Montufar for Guatemala (2p50) 1927 Canberra issue for Australia 1928 Catacombs excavation fund for Spain Pope and King 1928-30 Garzon For Uruguay 1932 Columbus for Colombia 1931 + Stamps for the British commonwealth: British Guiana Sierra Leone Jamaica lanscapes Jubilee stamps for Nth Borneo Cayman Islands Assembly of justices… The rajah for Sarawak 1932 Kings for Thailand 1932 1935 8c for Johore Omnibus series for silver jubilee of KGV Silver Jubilee for Sth Rhodesia 1936—a flood of new issue for the BC for KGVI First was Sth Rhodesia ( a masterpiece) 1940 Cecil Rhodes 1942-43 Watussi native heads for Congo Enough chatting, I guess his best work would be the 1929 £1 Postal Union Congress Issue. I don't ownan original copy as they are pretty expensive, but I do have a block printed from the original plates...which is almost as good, I hope: A closer look at a single stamp: Alex |

One of his first engravings was the 1911 Downey head issue, The first with King George V. I wont post a scan as there are many scans of much higher quality than I could provide in Skilo54's very informative thread: https://goscf.com/t/12112&SearchTerms=Downey,headsAnother quite famous engraving was the 1913 Seahorses issue: there were four denominations issued: |

Tefloncinco - I'm glad that you like some of the engraved stamp images posted in this thread. However, none of the Austria stamps included in your post above were engraved. They were all printed by a different process called lithography, and therefore they do not belong in this thread. - nethryk |
