nethryk - The Filatelie bi-monthly used to mention Babić's first name as Stanimir, not Stanislav. Could you have another look at it?

florian- Thank you for providing me with this additional information about S. Babic's first name. In fact, I only have found one online source for his name being "Stanislav;" but then again I have not yet found an independent online confirmation for "Stanimir." Accordingly, I will edit my previous post to reflect this small uncertainty. - nethryk

Jan M. Kopecki (1945- ) is a Polish engraver of banknotes and postage stamps. Here are images of four examples of Kopecki's work on stamps issued by Poland.

rod222 - Corrado Mezzana (1890-1952) was an Italian painter and a prolific designer of stamps, particularly for Italy and Vatican City, but to the best of my knowledge he did not actually engrave any stamps himself. For some biographical information about Mezzana, Google this URL: http://www.scepsi.it/mezzana/vita.asp and then select "Translate this page." - nethryk

You know, I think you're right Nethryk,
I had second thoughts after I posted,
and was hoping some earlies may have qualified.
A painter is not an engraver!

Thanks for the heads up.

nethryk - Josef Sejpka was a postage stamp designer, not an engraver.

The Hitler stamp (signed JŠ) has nothing to do with Josef Sejpka. It was engraved by Jindřich/Jindra Schmidt (after an actual photograph). When I asked him back in 1973 why he had used JŠ, not JS, he told me he had wanted to accentuate the fact that he was a Czech engraver, so he had used the Czech spelling of his surname (Šmíd) as it sometimes happens in old Registry recordings.

The rest of the stamps were designed by Josef Sejpka and engraved by Jaroslav Goldschmied (1890-1977). You can spot his miniature G for Goldschmied on Smetana's shoulder close to the left-hand frame, on the Republic's shoulder next to the right-hand frame, and opposite the claw of the dog's paw just outside the plinth.

florian - Wow! Thanks for all the corrections to my post on Josef Sejpka. I'm just going to delete the entire post and rework these images into other threads. - nethryk

nethryk - Re-viewing stamp images here I realized I could add one more complete name of a Japanese engraver to your list, that of Shokichi Nakada (your post of 11/27/2011 on p. 49) mentioned in the Czechoslovak FILATELIE bi-monthly of the period.
