This is a a charity label from Las Palmas (Gran Canaria) from January 1937. They were prepared but not issued before an order was published that forbade all (local) issues that showed words like "correos." They, later, were overprinted to obliterate the word "CORREOS" and issued. They are known without the overprint.
Gálvez (1960) lists the overprinted stamp as B511, but does not list it without the overprint as those were never issued for use.
The Canarias were very firmly in the hands of the nationalist band.
The labels paid a local supplementary charge. Benéfico social = social beneficiary.
Edit: B510 is a 5 cts green and black B511 a 10 cts red and carmine B512 a 15 cts blackish slate and black
They were printed in Berlin by the Staatliche Drúckerei and have the German crosses and circles watermark. At the time of issue, only Lufthansa flight PF 191 (Berlin - South America v.v.) stopped at Gando (Las Palmas). It is thought airmail from the Peninsula was carried on board. An order from Berlin, very likely, would have reached Las Palmas on board this flight.
The Canarias (canary Isles) are a vulcanic archipelago off the coast of Northeast Africa. The archipelago comprises of the provinces Santa Cruz and Las Palmas, named for the capitals of the two biggest islands, Tenerife and Gran Canaria, respectively. They are joined capitals of the archipelago.
General Franco was demoted to the Islands (Tenerife) by the Spanish Republic. He would lead the Spanish forces stationed in Morocco at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War and become the leader of the military (after the deaths of General Sanjurjo and General Mola) and government.
Before crossing the Atlantic Ocean, in 1492, Cristobal Colón stayed in Las Palmas. After stopping off La Gomera (Santa Cruz Province) to take in water, he started the journey across the Atlantic, re-discovering the Americas on 12 October 1492.
Hoping it is okay to tag on to this thread with another inquiry. I cannot find a listing (looked through Denmark and Norway) SC to no avail. Fem Kroner, blue stamp w/ an "S" in the center. Any insights are always appreciated. Thank you in advance!
