Received this from a source in Germany.

These cancels were given alphabetically to all the Bavarian post offices. There was 2 types, the closed and the open Mühlradstempel.
A Pdf list of the first issue (1850) is on the Internet
http://www.klassische-philatelie.ch...tempel_1.pdf the second list is to follow but is not there as yet.
These were re-issued Dec. 1, 1856 so most numbers have two office they were attached to.

Full details are in the Sem Bayern Spezialkatalog Vol I.
The firms homepage is at http://www.peter-sem.de and the catalogue is for sale. It is the key literature if you do Bavaria in depth.

Thanks for the heads up on the listing. I'll have to keep my eye open for part 2, as well. I've thought about seeking out such a list, but figured it might not be out there in the public domain, so to speak.

I just meant that this is the kind of stuff that small groups of philatelists sometimes seem to try to keep to themselves.

Why the internet doesn't seem to have a list of British P.O. numbers as of yet is hard to fathom. Someday...

The new edition of Collect British Postmarks will probably be out by then, and I won't need it...

Thanks for the info and link(s) Revstampman!

I missed this somehow. I have just started collecting these. They are called star or millwheel cancels. Yours is the first mention of wagon wheel cancel I have seen but I am new at this. I knew what you meant though.

I see a similar cancel on a New South Wales Victorian era stamp also posted in the Postmarks thread.

Now I just have to start saving more pennies and sharpen my eyes and ears.

You can check out this site (in German) - it lists both the 1850 and 1856 wagon wheel number cancellations. The info is spread out over a couple of pages but isn't too hard to find.

Just stumbled upon this thread. I have attached three early examples of what I think are the Wagon Wheel varieties. Are these 18 - "Closed", 380 - "Open", and 145 - "Closed" types? If so, then my reading of the various links says that 380 is not known as an Open type. I guess this one area could be a collector's career.

The "numeral" cancels were used from 1850 to 1869. They are listed in price groups in Michel-Spezial, but not identified by name, at least in my 1997 edition. Unfortunately, your 18, 380, and 145 are all common numbers. The really rare numbers are 908 to 920, with a few smaller numbers mixed in.

In the same catalog, Baden's numbers ARE identified with town name; of course, there's a lot fewer of them. Go figger. Specialists' books or online compilations are better sources anyway.

Well, I was one out of three ... not too bad. How do we define open or closed? I was looking at the outside wheel, but, apparently, it is some other feature. Would love to know...

Hello all,
This is awesome to know. I just started my Bavarian collect. Sadly, I do not read or speak German. Are these reference manuals available in English? Also, I'm looking for a guide or site that would let me know the print runs, verity and dates the postage was used. Sorry for reviving an old thread its just it has the information I was looking for.

Thanks,
Joe

Hello Josephswager, welcome to Stamp Community.

I think he Michel Katalog has explanations for some of these answers, but in official-type German. An older catalogue would be OK for this also I think.

Searching the internet for Mühlradstempel or Mill wheel cancel, or Millwheel cancel or postmark, would probably produce some results.

Thanks so much Puzzler. I did a little research and found this http://www.briefmarken.de/international-customers. How good the English guides are I don't know, but they have to be better than my Scotts 2008. I'll post back and let everyone know.
