I have tried searching on Google for a source of the 3 cent Look Magazine coil (Liberty Series, US). No luck.

Is anyone here familiar with this stamp and where it can be bought?

Also related are the large hole and small hole perforations on the Liberty series. Anyone know of a source for these in pairs/

Yet another fascinating twist, in addition to large and small holes, there is a "LOOK coil reprint" that involved a variation in the tagging process. I'm going to have to get a UV light source!

Quote:
LOOK Coil Reprint - a special printing of the LOOK Coil made to satisfy collector demand. The reprint became a new variety because the BEP applied the tagging by metal plates. The tagging on the reprint glows duller and grainier under ultraviolet light than the tagging on the original LOOK Coil. (Source: US Stamp Society Glossary)

Thanks Steve for those links. I did make a buy from one of them, although I don't think any are the LOOK coil.

Rod222 I guess I will either have to get a UV lamp, or trust a seller that the stamp is the LOOK coil if and when I locate one. Like I said, google did not turn up any leads.

Anyway, guys thanks for the help. Who knew that the 1954 Liberty series could be so challenging. What with the wet and dry printings and other variations, it can get a little complicated.

Because of this post I went to my box of "extras" and found an envelope with about 2 dozen of the coil stamp with at least two different varieties.

Like you, I will have to get a UV lamp in order to determine which varieties they are -- I'll let you know if I find any of the LOOK coil.

I think I have a gaggle of LOOK coils which I bought from a fellow named Wayne [RIP] way back in the 80's. Keep in touch; I might share a few. I bought a few when he lived in the D. C. area. They were stolen; so I chased him down to find he was retired up in the ID/MT area. He sold me some more. Included is at least one Hot Line pair.

Kevin, I believe that Warren means that he legitimately bought these, then someone stole them from Warren, so Warren then needed a replacement. He did not mean that he knowingly bought stolen property in the first place. But I did a double-take after reading the post.

Trying to properly tackle the Liberty series without a UV light is like a carpenter trying to build a house without a hammer or saw. There is nothing more important than having the right tools for the job.

Fortunately most of the Liberty series have only 2 or 3 varieties for each face-different issue. Mastering the 3 cent value in its sheet/booklet/coils forms will get you through all the rest. One of the most useful tools to my initial learning of wet/dry was to have dated examples on cover. The earliest uses HAD to be wet printing due to the date of use - then I could work forward and find dry printings among the later covers.

Apologies for the blurred image. I took the pic with my camera and was a little too close.
The top pair is the untagged pair.
The middle is the Look coil
The bottom is the reprint of the Look coil. It was the attempt to supply additional examples, but because of the production method, resulted in a new variety.

I found the two strips of LOOK coils I bought from Wayne to replace one which were stolen from me. Sadly, I did NOT find a Hot Line pair. I DID notice something strange however. In a very dark room, scanning with my UV, one pair looked different from the others. Close examination reveals that I have a paste-up pair! Dang near invisible. Guess I have 45 of these coil stamps and only one Joint Line Pair. I can be contacted at WarrenWolff at aol dot com.
