Eduard Suess (1831-1914) was an Austrian geologist who was an expert on the geography of the Alps. Dr. Suess (sorry, couldn't resist!) is responsible for hypothesizing two major former geographical features, the super continent Gondwana (proposed in 1861) and the Tethys Ocean. Here is an image of a stamp featuring a portrait of Suess and a geological map of Europe, designed and combined engraved by Werner Pfeiler and photogravue, and issued by Austria on April 26, 1989 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Eduard Suess's death, Scott No. 1454. Note: The crater Suess on the Moon and a crater on Mars are named after the good professor. - nethryk |

Kozler Peter (1824-1879) is Slovenian lawyer, geographer and politician, worked as lawyer in different towns in Istria (Rovin, Labin, Vodnjan and Pazin), in Tolmin, Gorizia and Trieste. Later together with his sister and brothers he established the largest brewery in Carniola at the time. He got involved in politics in 1848 as a member of the Slovenia Society in Vienna. He researched to just exactly where the Slovenes were living in Istria, in the Gorizia district, Carinthia and Hungary, and lectured on Slovene linguistic borders. He described the Slovene ethnical border in Kratki slovenski zemljopis (Short Slovenian Geography) published in 1854. This material was the basis of Zemljovid Slovenske dežele in pokrajin ( A map of the Slovenian Country and Regions) - the first map of Slovene regions - which was confiscated by the Austrian military authorities. |
