The Soviet Salyut program was the world's first series of space stations, launched beginning in 1971 to enable long-duration human spaceflight and scientific research in orbit. A notable mission was Salyut 4 (1975), visited by cosmonauts Aleksei Gubarev and Georgy Grechko aboard Soyuz 17, who spent nearly a month conducting experiments in astronomy, Earth observation, and medicine. Their work helped advance knowledge of how humans can live and work in space for extended periods.
