The Soviet Salyut program was the world's first series of space stations, launched beginning in 1971 to enable long-duration human spaceflight and scientific research in orbit. A notable mission was Salyut 4 (1975), visited by cosmonauts Aleksei Gubarev and Georgy Grechko aboard Soyuz 17, who spent nearly a month conducting experiments in astronomy, Earth observation, and medicine. Their work helped advance knowledge of how humans can live and work in space for extended periods.

Aleksei Gubarev and Georgy Grechko, issued by Laos on October 25, 1977 to mark the 60th anniversary of October Revolution.

The Apollo–Soyuz Test Project (ASTP), conducted in July 1975, marked the first joint mission between the United States and the Soviet Union and symbolized the easing of Cold War tensions. It involved the docking of an American Apollo spacecraft with the Soviet Soyuz 19, enabling joint experiments such as an artificial solar eclipse to study the corona and providing valuable experience in international space cooperation. For the United States, it was the final Apollo mission and the last crewed launch until the Space Shuttle era began in 1981. The mission crews were Tom Stafford, Vance Brand, and Deke Slayton aboard Apollo, and Alexei Leonov and Valery Kubasov aboard Soyuz.

Apollo – Soyuz Space Test Project, designed by Jean-Louis Puvilland and issued by the Kingdom of Laos on July 7, 1975.
