When visiting my sister in Montreal, we dug out an old stock with a few mint sets of stamps of China from the 60's and 70's.

One is this interesting issue with a blond woman dancing on two stamps, and another with a woman dancing with a rifle.

Does anyone know what this set was issued for, and have a catalog number? I do not have a Scott with China.

Can't help with Scott numbers, but this set depicts a then famous, now notorious, Cultural Revolution era ballet, The White-haired Girl. It was a great favourite of Madame Mao's, and was one of the very few officially approved ballets, so was repeated ad nauseam.

There's a long Wiki entry on it here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_White_Haired_Girl

The stamps are designs from the ballet "The White-haired Girl." From left to right in your image, they are 1127, 1129, 1126 and 1128. The 2009 Scott catalogue value for a set of four unused was $12 and used were listed as $4.40.

Given that it was printed on each stamp, probably not!

Valid point, SV. We'll leave it to BeeSee to determine if a prize is in order!

I like that first stamp with the mountain.
Brought to mind ABBA and The Eiger Sanction all at the same time.
Fascinating.

To those of us who remember the Cultural Revolution (at a distance), the set brings on a distinctly queasy feeling.

Nothing more relaxing than a nice evening at a ballet featuring an AK-47 and killing!

Notice on the stamps with the snow scenes, the soldiers do not wear gloves. And on the vertical stamps, the soldier appears to be giving the Vulcan hand sign to Spock!
