Looking at the results of your survey I was thinking that when people reach the age of about mid 40's and they have become successful in their endeavors and a little more money is available then stamp collecting becomes more serious. Maybe an inherited collection from a parent starts them collecting again.

Two questions for people to answer - don't know how to make dots for surveys!

Male or female (I suspect that the ratio of males to females is increasing from what it used to be)
What age did you seriously start collecting i.e moved from the "school boy" type collection.

I started when I was seven, but really got serious about it during college (20-21) when I had my own car that allowed me to get to shows, stores and clubs. Before that I only had access to stamps when my folks took me to hobby stores, flea markets, yard sales and antique stores - all which consisted of grab bags, hobby packets or just plain luck.

SV : also Napex is another big stamp show just outside of the DC beltway on the Virginia side..usually in June. There's another called Metropex, but I forgot when that one happens. I would recommend the Balpex show...lots of dealers, lots of selection.

Stampvirgin,

If you make that trip to Bethesda on the 28th of this month, you might also want to swing by Rockville. This week's issue of Linn's has an announcement for a "Suburban Stamp and Cover Show" at the Best Western (1251 W. Montgomery Street) from 9:30am to 4:30pm.

I'd be interested in your thoughts on Maryland Stamps and Coins after you've paid them a visit.

Steve

Thanks for the GREAT POLL! I didnt think I'd get that many responses I see we have a to be expected yet well rounded community.

BRUCE, your right on the money I inherited part of mine which made me want to fill out the collection to better meet what I wanted
thus my collection was born serious about 2 months ago and already flourishing (on my days off)work seems to be a nuisance affecting production of completed stamps.

Edwin, I think there are young collectors out there..most of us started out young..its just that they seem invisible because they do not have the money or means to travel to a stamp show like we older kids can !!

I am the youngest member of my local stamp club at 34- I joined in my late 20's. I'd like to change that, but it is difficult to get youngsters involved and their parents to support their hobby in an organized fashion. However, a percentage of kids whom start a collection and then put it aside for a few years or decades come back to the hobby when they have the desire and time.

Battlestamps.. I sure wish the heck there were some stamp shows around here...
I have Googled for all kinds of stamp topics, shows, stores, etc.. in Maryland.. can't find a darn thing...

Stampvirgin,

September 19. Pikesville. Baltimore Friendly Monthly Stamp & Coin Show. This would be at the Pikesville Hilton. They usually have a show once a month. I haven't been there yet, but I'm hoping to hit it next month.

The poll results are also about where I figured they would be. I am encouraged to see new youth at our Beginner Table at our annual show. While there is no rush it is pretty steady.I firmly believe that the key to developing collectors for the future is to expose them to the hobby at a young age because as most of here, they will turn away from the pursuit for years but, many will return.
