Concern has been voiced in other forums over whether stamps have been cancelled or not by various means that are largely invisible to the naked human eye.

Could this be true? What if it is?

Is invisibility harmful? Who puts them there and why? What are they up to?

Are our invisible resources being depleted?

What about our mental outlook on our mail? Does invisibility make us happy or unhappy?

Isn't real better?

Some different cancels are shown below to illustrate the ideas above:

Popcorn Cancels:

These stamps all have invisible cancels that say 'POPCORN GOOD'. They have been placed in a plastic bag to prevent contamination spreading to other stamps and possibly people. This is batch #100.

It doesn't mean anything that, just last week, I decided to buy an unusually large box of Orville Redenbacher's regular popcorn. Everyone knows that popcorn is good for you.

! WARNING !
You may want to move the kids into the next room before you view the following cancels.

They are most insidious and can be found everywhere on everything. Here is shown batch #200 of some 52c stamps that have hopefully been isolated in a special invisibility-proof plastic bag.

They are the oh so nice . . .

Happy Faces Cancels !!

Right now I want to say how great everyone has been lately. I really enjoy everything about everyone. I just break into a big smile when I log on here.

Have a nice day !

One cautionary note.

When talking to other people it is probably best not to mention invisible cancels or, if you inadvertently do mention them, to just go quiet on the subject and not mention them again. Just pretend you didn't mention them in the first place.

Remember we are try to contain the spread.

Loose lips sell popcorn and make people happy and lord knows what else is out there.

Puzzler,
these are listed in Gibbons as "subliminal message" cancels.

It just highlights that the reusing of a stamp that has been postally used with no postmark on it is just not a smart thing to do. To cheat with a letter rate or any other postage is just not worth being convicted with postal fraud. The reuse of a stamp will never come off paper again so is useless to collect. The reuse of stamps and how common it is has a lot of people in the post offices wanting to catch them in the act. It would be a good money spinner being caught in the act of reusing that stamp with an invisible postmark! KGV

I don't think it's worth getting paranoid about, but here's a brief comment about "invisible" ink cancels:

Quote:
"You may be wondering why you'd ever want to print in invisible ink. The truth is you'd be surprised how often business forms and other materials that you handle on a daily basis contain invisible ink. Most commonly it is used to print information on business forms that is to be used by a scanner or forms processor. The idea here is to reduce the amount of clutter that's actually visible on the pages by making these markings invisible to the eye. One of the biggest users of invisible ink is the United States Postal Service. These days most mailing sorting centers use UV visible ink to create scannable bar codes on envelopments and packages to supply important routing information to handling equipment and other sorting machines that come in contact with the collateral."
