Does anyone know if perfins have been organized by numbers? I saw someone post a number next to some of them, and I wondered where this was obtained. I have searched the internet and can't find anything helpful.

Also, what determines the "rating" of a perfin (A+, A-, etc.)

This is what an Aussie perfin catalogue looks like
(pretty boring)

Alphabetically, then format of punctures

page 173 on the letter "M"

Oh ok. Looks cool. So is there one for the United States? And how are they rated? Maybe there is a free online one? I'm just very interested in perfins and would like to know more about them. By the way, please don't post any "perfin club" link. All of their links are broken.

Things may have changed,
but online perfin catalogues do not exist.
There are individuals of certain countries
that post very good perfin information.
US I do not think so.

Australian has "Commercial" and "Private" perfin catalogues
both $70 each
which may explain why they are not online.

And how are they rated?

The code underneath the perfin contains the
information of the perfin, sighted?, tied?,
rarity factor?, etc
I do not have the legend so cannot comment on the
example.
You would need a perfin expert to
translate the rarity factor to a suggested reserve, when selling.

The US Perfins Catalog (Editor John Randall) is a super reference. The most recent edition is from 1998 and there are supplements available with new finds and price adjustments. It is listed at 70$ on the www.perfins.org website. Our website appears to be 'under repair' but mostly working. US perfins are rated A (scarcest) to F (very common) with + adjustments for the BC&D's. General price levels have been going up. An A-rated can easily bring over 100$. DE&F's are fun but no cash value.

There is a set of books on the topic of British perfins that a friend of mine has. Britain has no less than 15,000+ patterns and that is believed to be only half of what is out there, possibly even more.

He got the books because he is a member of a society that produced the them.

I'll send him an email and ask who authored the book and where can it be procured from.

These previous links might also be helpful on the subject, although they relate to precancel perfins:

I know a collector whom has a Perfin catalog that I am going to look at after the holidays. I am becoming interested in Railroad and Oil/Gasoline company perfins.
