i think it is better to wait and just buy something worthwhile i have collected many things and I think it is better to purchase something you would appreciate and not something just as a filler. that is my thought

To use your own (harsh) words, just bury it and give it a good death.... |

SV that's a good example why I don't collect these old classics.
Not because I don't like them since I would love to have the 1869 Bi coloureds or a Blackjack but I want well centered stamps, no missing perfs, tears, etc. And since very fine copies are way out of my league I would rather pass. It would bug me to no end if I bought something like that every time I looked at it. Even for a space filler I wouldn't pay two cents for it. That's why I collect modern where I can get a pristine copy.
But that's just my opinion, I'm sure a lot of collectors would disagree with me. |

Daryl, Why only spend $5 on that one when you can pick this one up on ebay for only $24.99 plus $1 shipping? Seriously, I'm amazed at some of the stuff people put up for auction. I'm even more amazed that some of it actually sells. Glad to see you've decided to pass -- I'm sure the space in your album would look far better empty than with that one filling it! Steve |

My view is totally different...
I'll never have/nor spend the kind of money needed to get the "good" stuff, but I'm quite happy to aquire what others would call "junk" or less than space fillers to fill the holes in my collection. For me, I look at what the physical stamp can represent to me, which is a piece of history. I'm fascinated that I may be able to hold in my hand a stamp that was used to move the mail some 100 or 100+ years ago. I particularly like it if the stamp has a dated cancel, even more if the town is readable. Sure I would prefer a defect free specimen, I'm just not bothered too much if a stamp is damaged if I can get it at a giveaway price from someone that might be thinking of throwing it away anyway. If any of you accumulate any old USA junk/damaged stamps, please put a small group up for sale or auction :)
Merry Christmas Ya'all

Dave, I'll try to accommodate you in the next few days. I have a number of faulty classics I was planning to sell. Now where did I put them? And Merry CHRISTmas to you too, marty |

Thanks for your consideration Quigngt,
I wouldn't mind seeing pics in a "Spacefiller" thread. Cubanstampissues just posted a nice pic of an early USA issue recently. I liked seeing that one too.

I haven't located my stamps yet. Maybe I left them in Pennsylvania. I'm in MI for a few more days. |

Hello Fred, welcome!
= = = = = = = = =
I always thought myself that stamps that were not 'really good' (my words to myself), or Fine to Very Fine condition were not worth collecting.
But after years of looking at some and even selling a few for, naturally, give away prices I have come to the realization that they may have some quality after all.
They are historical and, being used, have seen service doing their duty and all that. They are the real McCoy and not fakes (hopefully) and,if nothing else, I can use damaged copies to compare to fakes for colours or cancels even.
Sometimes when you are out of the way of the mainstream of stamp selling and buying you are happy to get a cheap priced specimen. Hey, when you get a better copy, if ever, you can compare them and learn, or just be happy you have such a great copy. |

Not all collections are exhibition quality and not all stamps are very fine. I have some rather ugly space fillers. There is nothing wrong with space fillers at space filler prices. The wonderful thing about collecting is that you can set your own parameters for content, quality and cost. |

The only exhibition I want is for myself. I have a few less than high quality stamps, but until something better comes along, they are in my album. Do I want VF or better? Sure, but it is all a matter of economics.
The one thing I do not collect is stamps with a piece missing. That I do draw the line at. |
