I know this is a relatively common stamp for this issue, but I've been wondering how to evaluate it. Here's scan of the overall image and a close-up of the "triangle" in an attempt to determine the type:

Now for my questions:

1. I think it's a Type III (Scott 252) ... am I correct?

2. The stamp has no gum; yet it appears uncancelled. Again, am I correct or would anyone evaluate it otherwise?

3. Assuming a #252, the catalog value of a used copy is $14; an unused $120, although I know those values are based on XF condition. However, this example looks pretty decently centered, so would I expect it to be rated in VG-F condition?

4. With no gum, I will assume this is much closer to the used copy value, but given that there is a considerable difference between used and unused prices, how would you evaluate this particular stamp?

Any comments/opinions would be welcomed.

If it has a watermark - it is not 252 - did you check? Sometimes they are hard to spot.

You did not mention whether you have checked for a watermark. If it is watermarked, it is likely a Scott 279B with minimal value.

Based on the triangle the stamp is either Type III (252 unwatermarked, 267 wmk 191) or Type IV (Scott 279B wmk 191 recut "T" in "TWO", recut hair line and recut portrait oval).

Sorry. My mistake. I didn't look far enough down the listings to get to the 279B. (It appears to be watermarked.) So I guess the value is minimal.

Anyway, as long as I've posted this, anyone care to suggest what color variety this might be...I have the color charts, but sometimes the color varieties are so subtle the charts don't really help all that much. Is it "red" or "rose carmine" or "carmine" or...? (I guess it really doesn't matter all that much as there is little change in value regardless of what might be the final color determination.)

Thanks for the response. Since I learned this is a stamp of minimal value, the color isn't that crucial, so I'll just consider it a 279B and take it from there.
