I found this in my "I know what it is but what do I do with it" pile. Are there any Ben Franklin aficionados out there. Has anyone seen this. Is it worth any more than a "nice cover" (although as a collector that is quite enough for me- I won't go to the corner again). I just have never seen another one. Any thoughts - Jeff

I am not a Ben collector, but if I was I'd add that one to my collection. I do have some of the 300th Anniversary stamps with pictorial postmarks on covers that I sent for.

That postmark was on the same day of the 250th anniversary of Ben Franklin stamp (Scott #1073) that was issued in Philadelphia. Chances are Boston wanted to get into the act by having their own philatelic commemorative, and since the stamp was not issued there, the rubber stamp cachet was probably the next best thing.

For any of you interested in a 250th anniversary (1956) spread on Ben Franklin's history, Life magazine did a rather nice job at this link:

I am a Washington / Franklin collector and have hundreds of Stamps and Hundreds of commercial covers, yes that would be a nice addition to any Franklin collection.
I do not worry about value as I have many pieces that are worth next to nothing, but I like them which is what matters to me. I even collect other countries that have Washington / Franklin on their stamps and there are plenty of countries that did that.

You sound like me with Abraham Lincoln! There isn't a cover I haven't seen that I don't like relates to my Lincoln topical collection.

JH,
Sorry about highjacking your topic. Now back to your regular programming...

Jeff, there were many of these types of covers produced to commemorate births, deaths ar anniversaries of events. Most are not particularly valuable but are nice collectable items.
