Old philatelic ads are not that common, but when they are found, they often make for interesting reading. For example, this one was used as a "filler" in a 1937 First Day Cover:

Anyone care to share some others? I'm sure there must be many more out there.

OK, I was not sure whether to put this with Russ's postcards or with wt1's advertisements. The two pieces of course are separate, but came in the same envelope as an offer from this Avalon Stamp Co of Springfield, MA. The postcard slips into the fold of the green paper so that none of the writing is upside down. It's just on two sides. The postcard is legitimate, but I have no idea if it is worth anything or even has a catalog number (maybe someone would know), but I have kept them together all these years and now I must figure out where to file them. (No, Rod not the circular file, I am not going to the corner again!) What does anyone know about this oddity - anything? Thanks as always - Jeff

Jeff, interesting the way the ad was printed. Scott does not list most of these errors but they are pretty common mis-cut variety. The postcard with the Avalon flier makes a really nice piece.

The card is a UX28. The oddity of it being miscut (as explained in the accompanying flyer) is simply an oddity. It may bring a small premium to those interested in such things, but in general it is common as it was often intentionally miscut solely as a collectible.

Great thread wt1 !

As a big fan of Philatelic Magazines Old and new, it's real nice to read some of the ads here.

Here are a few from publications I picked up over the years [Yes, I'm a real sucker for these but they are hard to find]

The first two are from the January 1911 edition of the Philatelic Record.

Both these companies are still going strong today, 100 years later !
I was happy to meet with the former owner of Bridger & Kay in London last May. A great guy. I wonder how many owners there were between the Ad above and him taking over ?

The next two are from Stamp Collecting, December 1922.

Rue Drouot in Paris is still a centre for Philately today. I was there two years ago and had a lovely few hours trawling the Stamp Shops. The passages [alleyways] are superbly atmospheric [for anyone visiting Paris-take note].
I liked the Cartoon, very early 20's feel and probably quite accurate !

Frank Godden worked for Stanley Gibbons until 1915 then had his own business at the address shown in the Ad, which was above a Woolworths store !
The business later moved out of London. His albums were top-class and very popular. He also dealt with other Philatelic accessories.

In 2010, Gibbons purchased The Frank Godden business and in a sense, Frank Godden 'came home'. Some of his albums were re-introduced by SG using the finest materials available.

Woolworths have also recently gone from the British High Street. Another sad victim of the modern times.

The Ad above is from the October 1921 edition of the RPS's The London Philatelist.

A more modern piece (found inserted in a 1980 cover) for the American Topical Association:

Does this qualify wt1? I don't think there are too many yesters in this yesteryear, and it isn't really an ad, but I thought it might fit, seeing it is from a stamp entity, and I never heard of them. Anyone else know of them?

A reproduction of the Stamp Magazine, a UK publication, from 1934 was given away with the magazine on the 75th anniversary in 2009.
Copies were also available with later magazines at the Festival Of Stamps In London, May 2010.
Superb ads and articles abound.
A few ads here plus the cover.

I have a couple of copies to give as gifts on a sales thread I have running.

Cover:

23 years after the ad shown earlier in this thread, Gibbons still going strong !

And here is something rarely seen. A full page ad taken out by Selfridges, London's biggest department store. I wonder when the Stamp section closed it's doors ?

Last but not least, a page of unusual facts. These kind of pages were often found in magazines of the era. So here is page of stamp facts !!

Londonbus1...loves going back in time.

I would like to buy any of these, but I would be especially interested in the Official Stamps, since my collection is lacking in that area

For those of you thinking of finally starting that Great Britain collection...
