This is the only example I have, so it prompts me to ask the question as to whether precancels on Perf. Horizontal coils were common in their day? This one example from Minneapolis has got to be a Type 164, but it is the only precancel example I have come across on a Perf. Horizontal coil (Scott #605).

There is a good catalog for these at: http://precanceled.com/?page_id=24 - City Coils:

Most are inexpensive - 25c or less.

Thanks. I just wasn't sure if precancels on the perf. horiz. variety was any less common that the traditional perf. vert. coils.

The Horiz perf varieties are much less common. I think the aforementioned catalog quotes prices - maybe somebody here owns one and can report. At one time I collected them but now I just have a book full I wonder what to do with. City coils make a nice collection that can easily fit into one binder. Incidentally, precancel collectors have traditionally ignored watermarks - so it is possible to find the scarcer rotary coils SC456/457/458 on low priced city precancels.

That threw me,
I always thought you considered the format
of the stamp not the perf.
I always counted that as a vertical coil.
ie perfed vert coil.

According to the Scott catalog, the Perforated Horizontally Coil is as shown above with top and bottom perforations horizontal to the stamp; the Perforated Vertically Coil is the traditional style with the vertical perforations to the left and right of the stamp.
