I couldn't figure out why the cancellation was lined up so nicely and it was so clean, til I realized it was a First Day Cover!

That begs the question: When did the "First Day of Issue" cancellation come into use?

And the best slogan they could come up with to honor Admiral Byrd was "Notify Your Correspondents" ???

Of course, if you moved to the South Pole, it would be hard for folks to find you ....

Starting with the 1937 3¢ Northwest Territory issue (Scott 795), the Post Office Department began offering a special postmark that included the words "First Day of Issue."

Thanks wt1. This Scott 801 (25Nov37) is the earliest FDC with that phrase that I could find in my collection. I imagine the novelty of the cancel probably explains why Mr. Barton had typed "First Day Cover" on the envelope he submitted.

Little late of a response (I just joined).

The first use of the slogan 'FIRST DAY OF ISSUE' in the cancellation was on July 13, 1937 for Sc. 795 3c Northwest Territory stamp with FDOI in both New York, NY and Marietta, OH. That version has 3 bars above and below the slogan.

Jeff, for your reference that was from a International Postal Supply Co. Model D30.
