A nearly illegible precancel from PA. Is it too far gone to identify? I was thinking Pittsburgh, PA, as the number of characters seem to fit, but if it is, something serious must have happened to the printing device for this example, as it looks almost as if it was an overstrike.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Thanks. Don't know how you figured it out, I've been looking at it for nearly an hour and couldn't get it. Was it just a poor print job or is there is there some known flaw that would have produced such a poor impression?

Poor print job... if you look at these things 3 hours a day for 25 years, the eye gets trained to visualize/categorize... its like an auto mechanic who can listen to your engine and tell you if its healthy.
Re Bethlehem - when I lived in NJ I loved to go over to Bethlehem by car and sightsee the old steel mills - very impressive - I can't imagine what they were like in their prime.
