I have just expanded to collecting precancels. I had them sorted
by issue date and now I decided to arrange them by State. I guess
this is just a preference, but, how many States actually precancel?
The reason I ask is that there are MANY States that I don't have
them for.

All of them did. One of the reasons why I do not collect precancels. Yet.

Not only US States; but US Territories also issued precancels! The only precancels in US States I don't personally have are from Alaska, but they, too, issued many precancels.

Here's a beginner's article on precancels that suggests that the total count of different precancels are in the millions, so there is a big field to choose from:

At ebay, on a typical day, you can find precancels from every state. Sometimes exquisitely rare items are offered. It is the best online site to learn about precancel pricing and how collections are structured.

The Precancel Stamp Society uses this definition:

Quote:
"Precancels are postage stamps that have been canceled before being used on letters or packages. Typically they are stamps cancelled with two lines, and the city and state where they where mailed. I like them because of the many ways you can collect them, and the affordability of most of them. Above all, the best part of collecting precancels are the other great collectors you'll meet along the way."

To start learning about them, this is a good link:

As kid, I was wondering about that. I was in Indonesia, every week, always asking for American stamps from my Aunt. She correspond to Americans for the Church. She collects them all for me. I thought every big cities made their own stamps.
